What does this course offer me?

• If you’re working in health or social care, this work based qualification is ideal for you.
• You’ll develop the knowledge and skills you need to do your job better.
• It’s a flexible course with lots of support from your tutor, on a one to one basis or by using an e-portfolio

Tell me about the course in general

• Before you start this course, you’ll need to be already working in health or social care, in a job that gives you a wide range of experience, and opportunities to work both on your own and as part of a team.
• You’ll build up a portfolio of evidence with the help of your tutor. And you’ll be assessed throughout the course in your workplace in several ways, including direct observations, professional discussions and witness testimony. You may also be able to use experience you’ve already built up, as evidence.

Course Requirements

Candidates need to complete 6 units, including 4 core units. To study NVQs at Level 2 you do need to be employed in the Health and Social Care sector, with 6 months experience.

Core Units
HSC21 – Communicate with, and complete records for individuals
HSC22 – Support the health and safety of yourself and individuals
HSC23 – Develop your knowledge and practice
HSC24 – Ensure your own actions support the care, protection and well-being of individuals

Optional Units
HSC25 – Carry out and provide feedback on specific plan of care activities
HSC26 – Support individuals to access and use information
HSC27 – Support individuals in their daily living
HSC29 – Support individuals to meet their domestic and personal needs
HSC210 – Support individuals to access and participate in recreational activities
HSC211 – Support individuals to take part in development activities
HSC213 – Provide food and drink for individuals
HSC214 – Help individuals to eat and drink
HSC215 – Help individuals to keep mobile
HSC216 – Help address the physical comfort needs of individuals.
HSC217 – Undertake agreed pressure area care
HSC218 – Support individuals with their personal care needs
HSC221 – Assist in the administration of medication
HSC223 – Contribute to moving and handling individuals
HSC224 – Observe, monitor and record the conditions of individuals

How will I be assessed?

To achieve the qualification candidates need to complete the four mandatory and four optional units.
The programme will consist of workshops and support within your workplace. An assessor will be appointed to provide support and assessment with the work place. You will need to present a portfolio of evidence for assessment and verification.

What can I do next?

You could apply for more senior care roles with responsibility for planning care. Or if you want to carry on studying, you could move on to an NVQ level 3 qualification in health and social care.
